Nexo Expands Services with Crypto-Backed Credit Lines in Australia
Nexo Australia has officially introduced crypto-backed credit lines after receiving approval as a Credit Representative, integrating this service into the nation’s consumer credit regulations. This strategic move positions Nexo among a select few digital asset platforms in Australia that provide regulated lending options secured by cryptocurrency holdings. The credit product adheres to the National Consumer Credit Protection Act, catering to eligible clients who wish to borrow funds without liquidating their digital assets. This launch broadens Nexo’s offerings in Australia, which previously included trading and yield services.
Details of the New Credit Offering
The newly available credit lines complement existing services such as the Nexo Exchange, the revamped Nexo Growth product, Nexo Booster, and the Wealth Club loyalty program on the Australian platform. Customers who qualify can borrow against various digital assets and receive their funds in either Australian Dollars (AUD) or stablecoins. Typically, these funds are accessible within a 24-hour timeframe, with interest rates ranging from 0.9% to 21.9% annually, depending on the customer’s loyalty tier and the specific credit line option chosen. Notably, this lending structure features no fixed terms, origination fees, and allows for flexible repayment schedules. Moreover, Australian clients are provided with a dedicated AUD account number for deposits, designed to minimize errors and delays when transferring to crypto platforms. A unique feature called Collateral Exchange also permits borrowers to change their collateral assets without disrupting the loan, thus enabling them to adjust their holdings while keeping access to their credit line.
Nexo’s Broader Strategy in the Australian Market
In addition to the credit lines, Nexo has reintroduced its yield product under the new name Nexo Growth, offering returns of up to 10% annually on supported assets. The rates vary based on the asset type and term, with options available for both flexible and fixed terms. Another new feature, Nexo Booster, allows clients to amplify their digital asset exposure by up to three times, using new positions as collateral. The Wealth Club loyalty program connects customer engagement with benefits such as borrowing rates and cashback across four distinct tiers. This expansion into Australia coincides with a notable increase in digital asset ownership within the country and a rise in personal lending. Nexo highlighted that nearly one in three Australians now owns cryptocurrency, and personal fixed-term loan commitments surged to AUD $9.8 billion in the March quarter, reflecting a 14.5% increase from the previous year. These trends have opened up opportunities for companies offering financial services tailored around crypto holdings, rather than limiting offerings to mere transactions or custody solutions.
Compliance and Consumer Protection Focus
Nexo Australia operates as a locally registered entity, recognized by AUSTRAC as a Virtual Asset Service Provider and a member of the Australian Financial Complaints Authority. The structure of its credit offerings is designed to comply with Australian consumer credit regulations. As part of the Nexo Group, which boasts over US$7 billion in assets under management and serves clients in more than 200 jurisdictions, the firm has processed over US$403 billion since its inception. Australia has emerged as a competitive landscape for global crypto companies aiming to forge closer relationships with retail investors who, while owning digital assets, seek access to conventional financial services such as lending and yield products. The regulated nature of these offerings is anticipated to become a significant differentiator as consumer protection scrutiny intensifies.
Commitment to Local Market Needs
Peter Stanhope, Nexo’s General Manager for Australia, expressed that the company has developed these products in accordance with local regulations and consumer protections in mind. “The Australian market is ready for a better, more integrated model. We built these products to provide Australian clients with highly cost-effective credit options while effectively utilizing their digital assets. Each product has been evaluated against the relevant Australian framework, ensuring that regulatory requirements and consumer protections are embedded from the very beginning,” stated Stanhope.
